Then one of the judges of the city stood forth and said, "Speak to us of Crime and Punishment."

അപ്പോള്‍ നഗരത്തിലെ ന്യായാധിപതികളിൽ ഒരാൾ എഴുന്നേറ്റു നില്‍ക്കുകയും, ഇങ്ങനെ പറയുകയും ചെയ്തു, 'ഞങ്ങളോട് കുറ്റവും ശിക്ഷയും എന്നതിനെപ്പറ്റി പറയൂ.'

And he answered saying:

അനന്തരം അയാള്‍ ഇങ്ങിനെ പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ട് ഉത്തരം നല്‍കി:

It is when your spirit goes wandering upon the wind,

നിങ്ങളുടെ ആത്മാവ് വായുവിന്മേൽ അലഞ്ഞുനടക്കുന്ന അവസരത്തിൽ,

That you, alone and unguarded, commit a wrong unto others and therefore unto yourself.

ഏകാന്തനായും, അശ്രദ്ധാലുവായും ആണ്, നിങ്ങള്‍ മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെമേലും, നിങ്ങളോടുതന്നെയും ആയുള്ള ഒരു തെറ്റ് ചെയ്യുന്നത്.

And for that wrong committed must you knock and wait a while unheeded at the gate of the blessed.

ആ ചെയ്ത തെറ്റിനാല്‍, അനുഗ്രഹിക്കപ്പെട്ടവരുടെ പടിവാതിലിൽ, നിങ്ങൾ മുട്ടുകയും, ആരും ഗൗനിക്കാനില്ലാതെ അല്‍പനേരം കാത്ത് നില്‍ക്കുകയും ചെയ്യേണ്ടിവരും.

Like the ocean is your god-self;

ആഴിപോലെതന്നെയാണ് നിങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവ-സ്വരൂപം;

It remains for ever undefiled.

അത് മലിനപ്പെടാതെ എന്നന്നേക്കുമായി നിലനില്‍ക്കും.

And like the ether it lifts but the winged.

സൂക്ഷ്മാകാശം പോലെ അത്, ചിറകുകളുള്ളതിനെ ഒഴികെ, ഉയര്‍ത്തുന്നു.

Even like the sun is your god-self;

സൂര്യനെപ്പോലെതന്നെയുമാണ് നിങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവ-സ്വരൂപം;

It knows not the ways of the mole nor seeks it the holes of the serpent.

തുരപ്പനെലിയുടെ പാതകള്‍ അതിന് അറിയില്ല, മാത്രവുമല്ല, സര്‍പ്പത്തിന്‍റെ മാളങ്ങള്‍ അത് അന്വേഷിക്കുന്നുമില്ല.

But your god-self does not dwell alone in your being.

എന്നിരുന്നാലും, നിങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവ-സ്വരൂപം നിങ്ങളുടെ അസ്തിത്വത്തില്‍ തങ്ങുന്നുമില്ല.

Much in you is still man, and much in you is not yet man,

നിങ്ങളില്‍ അനവധിവസ്തുക്കൾ മനുഷ്യന്‍തന്നെയാണ്, മാത്രവുമല്ല, നിങ്ങളിൽ അനവധികാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ഇന്നും മനുഷ്യനായിതീര്‍ന്നിട്ടുമില്ല,

But a shapeless pigmy that walks asleep in the mist searching for its own awakening.

മൂടല്‍മഞ്ഞിൽ സ്വന്തം ഉണര്‍വ്വ് തിരഞ്ഞുനടക്കുന്ന രൂപഭംഗിയില്ലാത്ത മുണ്ടൻ മാത്രമാണ് അത്.

And of the man in you would I now speak.

നിങ്ങളിലെ മനുഷ്യനെക്കുറിച്ച് ഞാന്‍ ഇപ്പോൾ സംസാരിക്കാം.

For it is he and not your god-self nor the pigmy in the mist, that knows crime and the punishment of crime.

കാരണം, നിങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവ-രൂപമോ, മൂടല്‍മഞ്ഞിലെ മുണ്ടനോ അല്ല, അപരാധവും, അതിനുള്ള ശിക്ഷയെക്കുറിച്ചും അറിയുന്നത്, മറിച്ച് അയാള്‍ക്കാണ്.

Oftentimes have I heard you speak of one who commits a wrong as though he were not one of you, but a stranger unto you and an intruder upon your world.

അപരാധം ചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരുവനെക്കുറിച്ച്, അയാള്‍ നിങ്ങളിൽ ആരുമല്ല, മറിച്ച് നിങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് അപരിചിതനായ ഒരുവനാണ് അയാൾ എന്നും, നിങ്ങളുടെ ലോകത്തിലേക്ക് വലിഞ്ഞുകയറിവന്നവനാണ് അയാള്‍ എന്നും, ധ്വനി നല്‍കുന്ന രീതിയിൽ പലപ്പോഴും നിങ്ങൾ സംസാരിക്കുന്നത് ഞാൻ കേട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്.

But I say that even as the holy and the righteous cannot rise beyond the highest which is in each one of you,

എന്നാല്‍ ഞാൻ പറയുന്നു, ഏറ്റവും ദിവ്യരായവരും, ഏറ്റവും ധര്‍മ്മിഷ്ഠരായവരും, നിങ്ങള്‍ ഓരോരുത്തരിലും ഉള്ള ഏറ്റവും ഉയരത്തിലുള്ള സ്വഭാവഗുണത്തിനേക്കാളും ഉയരത്തില്‍ എത്തില്ലാ എന്നത് പോലെ,

So the wicked and the weak cannot fall lower than the lowest which is in you also.

നിങ്ങളില്‍ ഉള്ള ഏറ്റവും താഴെക്കിടയിലുള്ള നീചത്വത്തേക്കാളും താഴോട്ട് യാതോരു ദുഷ്ടനോ ബലഹീനനോ താഴാന്‍ ആവില്ലതന്നെ.

And as a single leaf turns not yellow but with the silent knowledge of the whole tree,

മാത്രവുമല്ല, ആ മുഴുവന്‍ വൃക്ഷത്തിന്‍റെയും അറിവില്ലാതെ, ഒരു ഒറ്റ ഇല പോലും മഞ്ഞയണിയുന്നില്ല, എന്നത് പോലെ,

So the wrong-doer cannot do wrong without the hidden will of you all.

തിന്മ ചെയ്യുന്ന ആള്‍ക്ക് നിങ്ങളിൽ എല്ലാരുടേയും ഒളിച്ചുവച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന താല്‍പര്യം ഇല്ലാതെ യാതോരു തെറ്റും ചെയ്യാനാവില്ല.

Like a procession you walk together towards your god-self.

ഒരു ജാഥയില്‍ എന്നപോലെ, നിങ്ങള്‍ കൂട്ടത്തോടുകൂടി നിങ്ങളുടെ ഈശ്വരസത്തയിലേക്ക് നടക്കുന്നു.

You are the way and the wayfarers.

നിങ്ങള്‍ തന്നെയാണ് വഴിയും വഴിപോക്കരും.

And when one of you falls down he falls for those behind him, a caution against the stumbling stone.

നിങ്ങളില്‍ ഒരാള്‍ വീഴുമ്പോൾ, ആ ആൾ അയാള്‍ക്ക് പിന്നിലുള്ളവര്‍ക്കായാണ് വീഴുന്നത്, കാലുകളെ തട്ടിയിടുന്ന കല്ലുകളെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള അപായത്താക്കീത് നല്‍കാനായി.

Ay, and he falls for those ahead of him, who though faster and surer of foot, yet removed not the stumbling stone.

അതെ, അയാള്‍ക്ക് മുന്നിലുള്ളവര്‍ക്കുമായാണ് അയാൾ വീഴുന്നത്, അവര്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ വേഗതയുള്ളവരും, കൂടുതല്‍ ഉറപ്പുള്ള കാലുകളൾ ഉള്ളവരും ആയിരുന്നിട്ടുപോലും, അവര്‍ തടഞ്ഞുവീഴ്ത്തുന്ന ആ കല്ലിനെ എടുത്ത് മാറ്റിയില്ല.

And this also, though the word lie heavy upon your hearts:

ഈ വാക്കുകള്‍ നിങ്ങളുടെ ഹൃദയത്തിൽ ഭാരമേറിയതായി അനുഭവപ്പെടുമെങ്കിലും, ഇതും കൂടി കേള്‍ക്കുക:

The murdered is not unaccountable for his own murder,

കൊലചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്ന ആള്‍ അയാളുടെ സ്വന്തം കൊലപാതകത്തിൽ ഉത്തരവാദിത്വമില്ലാത്ത ആൾ അല്ല,

And the robbed is not blameless in being robbed.

കൈവശമുള്ള മുതൽ അപഹരിക്കപ്പെട്ട ആൾ, ആ മോഷണത്തിൽ കുറ്റമില്ലാത്ത ആളല്ല.

The righteous is not innocent of the deeds of the wicked,

ദുഷ്ടന്‍റെ ദുഷ് പ്രവര്‍ത്തനത്തിൽ ധര്‍മ്മിഷ്ഠൻ നിര്‍ദോഷിയല്ല,

And the white-handed is not clean in the doings of the felon.

മാത്രവുമല്ല, മഹാകുറ്റങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്യുന്ന ആളുടെ കൃത്യങ്ങളിൽ, കളങ്കമില്ലത്തവന്‍റെ കരങ്ങൾ ശുദ്ധമല്ല.

Yea, the guilty is oftentimes the victim of the injured,

അതെ, അപരാധം ചെയ്യുന്നവന്‍ പലപ്പോഴും മുറിവേല്‍ക്കപ്പെട്ടവന്‍റെ പീഡിതനാണ്,

And still more often the condemned is the burden-bearer for the guiltless and unblamed.

ഇതിനെക്കാളെല്ലാം കൂടുതലായി, പലപ്പോഴും കുറ്റംചുമത്തപ്പെടുന്നവന്‍ കളങ്കമില്ലാത്തവനും നിര്‍ദ്ദോഷിക്കും ആയി ഭാരംപേറുന്നവനാണ്.

You cannot separate the just from the unjust and the good from the wicked;

ന്യായരഹിതനില്‍നിന്നും നീതിഷ്ഠനെയും, ദുഷ്ടനില്‍നിന്നും നല്ലവനേയും നിങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് വേര്‍തിരിച്ചെടുക്കാൻ ആവില്ല;

For they stand together before the face of the sun even as the black thread and the white are woven together.

കറുത്ത നൂലും വെളുത്തതും ഒന്നിച്ച് നെയ്യപ്പെടുന്നു എന്നത്പോലെതന്നെ, അവര്‍ രണ്ടുപേരും ഒന്നിച്ചാണ് സൂര്യന്‍റെ മുഖത്തിന് മുന്നിൽ നില്‍ക്കുന്നത്.

And when the black thread breaks, the weaver shall look into the whole cloth, and he shall examine the loom also.

കറുത്ത നൂല്‍ പൊട്ടുമ്പോളൾ, നെയ്ത്തുകാരൻ മുഴുവൻ തുണിയിലും നോക്കും, മാത്രവുമല്ല, അയാള്‍ ആ നെയ്ത്ത് തറിയേയും പരിശോധിക്കും.

If any of you would bring judgment the unfaithful wife,

നിങ്ങളിശ ആരെങ്കിലും പാതിവ്രത്യശുദ്ധിയില്ലാത്ത ഭാര്യയെ വിചാരണയ്ക്കായി കൊണ്ടുവരുന്നുവെങ്കില്‍,

Let him also weigh the heart of her husband in scales, and measure his soul with measurements.

അയാള്‍ ആ സ്ത്രീയുടെ ഭര്‍ത്താവിന്‍റെ ഹൃദയത്തെയും തുലാസിൽ തൂക്കട്ടെ, അയാളുടെ ആത്മാവിനെ അളവുകോലുകള്‍കൊണ്ട് അളക്കട്ടെ.

And let him who would lash the offender look unto the spirit of the offended.

അപരാധം ചെയ്ത ആളെ ചാട്ടകൊണ്ട് അടിക്കാൻ തുനിയുന്ന ആൾ, അപരാധം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ട ആളുടെ ആത്മാവിലേക്ക് നോക്കട്ടെ.

And if any of you would punish in the name of righteousness and lay the ax unto the evil tree, let him see to its roots;

ധാര്‍മ്മികതയുടെ പേരിൽ നിങ്ങളിൽ ആരെങ്കിലും ഒരാൾ ശിക്ഷിക്കുകയും, ദുഷ്ടവൃക്ഷത്തില്‍ മഴുവെക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുമെങ്കിൽ, അയാൾ അതിന്‍റെ വേരുകള്‍വരെ നോക്കട്ടെ;

And verily he will find the roots of the good and the bad, the fruitful and the fruitless, all entwined together in the silent heart of the earth.

അപ്പോള്‍ തീര്‍ച്ചയായും, അയാള്‍ നല്ലതിന്‍റെയും, ചീത്തയുടേയും, ഫലസമൃദ്ധിയുടേയും, ഫലഹീനതയുടേയും വേരുകള്‍, എല്ലാം ഭൂമിയുടെ നിശബ്ദ ഹൃദയത്തില്‍ ഒന്നിച്ച് പിരിഞ്ഞ് കിടക്കുന്നതായി കണ്ടെത്തും.

And you judges who would be just,

നിങ്ങള്‍, നീതിമാന്മാരായ, ന്യായാധിപന്മാർ,

What judgment pronounce you upon him who though honest in the flesh yet is a thief in spirit?

ശരീരംകൊണ്ട് സത്യസന്ധനും, എന്നാല്‍ മനസ്കൊണ്ട് കള്ളനും ആയവന്‍റെ മേല്‍ നിങ്ങൾ എന്ത് വിധിന്യായമാണ് ഉച്ചരിക്കുക?

What penalty lay you upon him who slays in the flesh yet is himself slain in the spirit?

ശരീരംകൊണ്ട് കൊല്ലുകയും, എന്നാല്‍ ആത്മാവിൽ സ്വയം സംഹരിക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്നവന്‍റെ മേൽ നിങ്ങൾ എന്ത് പിഴയാണ് ഈടാക്കുക?

And how prosecute you him who in action is a deceiver and an oppressor, Yet who also is aggrieved and outraged?

പ്രവര്‍ത്തിയാൽ ചതിയനും ചൂഷകനും, അതെസമയം സ്വയം നൊമ്പരപ്പെടുന്നവനും, മഹാഅന്യായം അനുഭവിക്കുന്നതും ആയ ആളെ നിങ്ങള്‍ എങ്ങിനെയാണ് ശിക്ഷിക്കുക?

And how shall you punish those whose remorse is already greater than their misdeeds?

അപ്പോള്‍ത്തന്നെ അവരുടെ ദുര്‍വൃത്തിയെക്കാൾ വളരെ വലുതായ മനസ്സാക്ഷിക്കുത്ത് അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന ആളെ നിങ്ങള്‍ എങ്ങിനെയാണ് ശിക്ഷിക്കുക?

Is not remorse the justice which is administered by that very law which you would fain serve?

നിങ്ങള്‍ സാഹചര്യത്തിന്‍റെ നിര്‍ബന്ധത്താൽ സേവിക്കേണ്ടുന്ന അതേ നിയമംതന്നെയല്ലെ, മനോവേദനയെന്ന വിധിന്യായം നടപ്പാക്കിയത്?

Yet you cannot lay remorse upon the innocent nor lift it from the heart of the guilty.

എന്നിരുന്നാലും നിങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് നിരപരാധിയുടെമേൽ പശ്ചാത്താപം ചുമത്താനോ, അപരാധിയുടെ ഹൃദയത്തില്‍നിന്നും അത് എടുത്തുമാറ്റാനോ ആവില്ല.

Unbidden shall it call in the night, that men may wake and gaze upon themselves.

മനുഷ്യര്‍ ഉണരുകയും അവരുടെ മേല്‍ത്തന്നെ സ്വയം ദൃഷ്ടിപതിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുമാറാകാനായി, ക്ഷണിക്കാതെന്നെ അത് രാത്രിവേളയില്‍ വന്ന് വിളിക്കും.

And you who would understand justice, how shall you unless you look upon all deeds in the fullness of light?

എല്ലാ ചെയ്തികളെയും വെളിച്ചത്തിന്‍റെ പൂര്‍ണ്ണതയിൽ നിങ്ങൾ വീക്ഷിക്കുന്നില്ലായെങ്കില്‍, നീതിന്യായം അറിയുന്ന നിങ്ങൾ, അതെങ്ങിനെ നടപ്പിലാക്കും?

Only then shall you know that the erect and the fallen are but one man standing in twilight between the night of his pigmy-self and the day of his god-self,

നിവര്‍ന്ന് നില്‍ക്കുന്നവനും, നിലത്ത് വീണുകിടക്കുന്നവനും, ഒരേ മനുഷ്യന്‍തന്നെ അയാളുടെ പ്രാതസന്ധ്യാസമയത്ത്, രാത്രിയിലെ അയാളുടെ മുണ്ടന്‍ രൂപത്തിനും, പകലുള്ള അയാളുടെ ദൈവരൂപത്തിനും ഇടയില്‍ നില്‍ക്കുന്ന അയാളുടെ രണ്ട് രൂപങ്ങൾ മാത്രമാണ് എന്ന് നിങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് അപ്പോൾ മാത്രമാണ് തിരിച്ചറിവ് ലഭിക്കുക.

And that the corner-stone of the temple is not higher than the lowest stone in its foundation.

അമ്പലത്തിന്‍റെ അടിത്തറയിലെ ഏറ്റവും താഴെയുള്ള കല്ലിനേക്കാൾ ഉയരത്തിലല്ല, അതിലെ മൂലക്കല്ല് എന്നതും അറിയും.
