Then a hermit, who visited the city once a year, came forth and said, "Speak to us of Pleasure."

വര്‍ഷത്തിൽ ഒരിക്കൽ ആ നഗരം സന്ദര്‍ശിച്ചിരുന്ന ഒരു താപസൻ അപ്പോൾ മുന്നോട്ട് വന്ന്കൊണ്ട് പറഞ്ഞു, 'ഞങ്ങളോട് വിഷയസുഖത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയൂ.'

And he answered, saying:

അപ്പോള്‍ ഇങ്ങിനെ പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ട്, അയാള്‍ അതിന് ഉത്തരം നല്‍കി:

Pleasure is a freedom song,

സുഖം എന്നുള്ളത് ഒരു വിമോചന ഗീതമാണ്,

But it is not freedom.

എന്നാല്‍ അത് മോചനമല്ല.

It is the blossoming of your desires,

നിങ്ങളുടെ ആഗ്രഹങ്ങളുടെ പുഷ്പിക്കല്‍ ആണ് അത്,

But it is not their fruit.

എന്നാല്‍ അത് അവയുടെ കായ്കനിയല്ല.

It is a depth calling unto a height,

ഒരു ഉയരത്തെ ആഹ്വാനം ചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു താഴ്മയാണ് അത്,

But it is not the deep nor the high.

എന്നാല്‍ അത് അഗാധമായതുമല്ല, ഉത്തുംഗമായതുമല്ല.

It is the caged taking wing,

But it is not space encompassed.

എന്നാല്‍ വലയംചെയ്യപ്പെട്ട വിശാലതയും അല്ല അത്.

Ay, in very truth, pleasure is a freedom-song.

അതെ, പൂര്‍ണ്ണമായ സത്യത്തിൽ, സുഖോല്ലാസം ഒരു സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ-ഗീതം ആണ്.

And I fain would have you sing it with fullness of heart; yet I would not have you lose your hearts in the singing.

Some of your youth seek pleasure as if it were all, and they are judged and rebuked.

നിങ്ങളില്‍പ്പെട്ട ചില ചെറുപ്പക്കാർ, എല്ലാമായി, അതേയുള്ള എന്ന രീതിയില്‍ സുഖോല്ലാസത്തെ തേടുന്നു; അവര്‍ വിലയിരുത്തപ്പെടുകയും, ശാസിക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്നു.

I would not judge nor rebuke them. I would have them seek.

ഞാന്‍ അവരെ മൂല്യനിര്‍ണ്ണയം ചെയ്യുകയോ, അവര്‍ക്ക് താക്കീത് നല്‍കുയോ ചെയ്യില്ല. അവര്‍ അന്വേഷിക്കണം എന്നതിനായി ഞാൻ കളമൊരുക്കും.

For they shall find pleasure, but not her alone:

കാരണം അവര്‍ ഉല്ലാസം കണ്ടെത്തും, എന്നാല്‍ അയാളെ(സ്ത്രീ) മാത്രമല്ല:

Seven are her sisters, and the least of them is more beautiful than pleasure.

അയാള്‍ക്ക്(സ്ത്രീ) സഹോദരിമാര്‍ ഏഴാണ്, അവരില്‍ ഏറ്റവും നിസ്സാരമായ ആള്‍ സുഖോല്ലാസത്തെക്കാൾ സൗന്ദര്യവതിയാണ്.

Have you not heard of the man who was digging in the earth for roots and found a treasure?

മണ്ണില്‍ വേരുകള്‍ക്കായി കുഴിക്കുകയും ഒരു നിധികണ്ടെത്തുകയും ചെയ്ത ആളെക്കുറിച്ച് നിങ്ങള്‍ കേട്ടിട്ടില്ലെ?

And some of your elders remember pleasures with regret like wrongs committed in drunkenness.

നിങ്ങളില്‍ ചില വയോവൃദ്ധർ സുഖസൗകര്യങ്ങളെ മദ്യാസക്തിയിൽ ചെയ്തുപോയ തെറ്റുകള്‍കണക്കെയാണ് പശ്ചാതാപത്തോടെ ഓര്‍ക്കുന്നത്.

But regret is the beclouding of the mind and not its chastisement.

എന്നാല്‍ പശ്ചാത്താപം എന്നുള്ളത് മനസ്സിനെകലക്കിമറിക്കൽ മാത്രമാണ്, അതിന്‍റെ ശിക്ഷിക്കലല്ല.

They should remember their pleasures with gratitude, as they would the harvest of a summer.

വേനല്‍ ചൂടിൽ ലഭിച്ച ഒരു വിളവെടുപ്പ് എന്ന പോലെ, അവരുടെ സുഖാനുഭവങ്ങളെ കൃതജ്ഞതയോടെ അവർ ഓര്‍മ്മിക്കേണ്ടതാണ്.

Yet if it comforts them to regret, let them be comforted.

എന്നാല്‍, പശ്ചാത്തപിക്കലിൽ അവർ മനസ്സുഖം ആസ്വദിക്കുന്നുവെങ്കിൽ, അവര്‍ ആവിധം ആശ്വസിക്കട്ടെ.

And there are among you those who are neither young to seek nor old to remember;

അന്വേഷിക്കാന്‍മാത്രം ഇളം പ്രായമല്ലാത്തവരും, ഓര്‍മ്മിക്കുവാന്‍മാത്രം പ്രായം ഇല്ലാത്തവരും ആയവര്‍ നിങ്ങളിൽ ഉണ്ട്;

And in their fear of seeking and remembering they shun all pleasures, lest they neglect the spirit or offend against it.

ആത്മസത്തയെ അനാദരിക്കുകയോ, അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ അതിനോട് അപരാധം ചെയ്യുമെന്നോ ഭയന്ന്, അന്വേഷിക്കാനും ഓര്‍മ്മിക്കാനും ഉള്ള പേടിയാൽ, അവര്‍ എല്ലാതരം സുഖാവസ്ഥകളെയും ഒഴിവാക്കുന്നു.

But even in their foregoing is their pleasure.

എന്നാല്‍ അവരുടെ സുഖാവസ്ഥകളുടെ ഒഴിവാക്കലിലും അവർ ഉല്ലസിക്കുന്നു.

And thus they too find a treasure though they dig for roots with quivering hands.

അവര്‍ വേരുകള്‍ക്കായി വിറക്കുന്ന കരങ്ങളാൽ കുഴിക്കുന്നുവെങ്കിലും, അവരും അങ്ങിനെ ഒരു നിധി കണ്ടെത്തുന്നു.

But tell me, who is he that can offend the spirit?

എന്നാല്‍ എന്നോട് പറയൂ, ആത്മാവിനെ ദ്രോഹിച്ചലട്ടാന്‍ ആവുന്നവ ആൾ ആരാണ്?

Shall the nightingale offend the stillness of the night, or the firefly the stars?

നിശയുടെ അനക്കമില്ലായ്മയെ രാപ്പാടിക്കുയിലും, താരങ്ങളെ മിന്നാമിനുങ്ങും ദ്രോഹിച്ചലട്ടുമോ?

And shall your flame or your smoke burden the wind?

നിങ്ങളുടെ തീജ്വാല അല്ലെങ്കിൽ നിങ്ങളുടെ പുക കാറ്റിന് ക്ലേശഭാരം നല്‍കുമോ?

Think you the spirit is a still pool which you can trouble with a staff?

ഒരു കമ്പ് ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ഇളക്കിമറിക്കാനാവുന്ന ഒരു നിശ്ചല ജലാശയമാണ് ആത്മാവ് എന്ന് നിങ്ങള്‍ ചിന്തിക്കുന്നുണ്ടോ?

Oftentimes in denying yourself pleasure you do but store the desire in the recesses of your being.

പലപ്പോഴും വിഷയസുഖം നിങ്ങള്‍ക്കുതന്നെ നിഷേധിക്കുമ്പോൾ, നിങ്ങൾ ആകെ ചെയ്യുന്നത് മോഹങ്ങളെ നിങ്ങളുടെ അസ്തിത്വത്തിന്‍റെ ഗോപ്യപ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍ സംഭരിച്ചുവെക്കുകമാത്രമാണ്.

Who knows but that which seems omitted today, waits for tomorrow?

ഉപേക്ഷിക്കപ്പെട്ടവയായി ഇന്ന് തോന്നുന്നവ, നാളെയ്ക്കായ് കാത്തിരിക്കുകമാത്രമാണ് ചെയ്യുന്നത് എന്ന് ആര്‍ക്ക് അറിയാം?

Even your body knows its heritage and its rightful need and will not be deceived. And your body is the harp of your soul,

നിങ്ങളുടെ ശരീരത്തിന് പോലും, അതിന്‍റെ പൈതൃകവും, അതിന്‍റെ ന്യായമായുള്ള ആവശ്യകതകളും അറിയാം, അത് കബളിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടില്ല. മാത്രവുമല്ല, നിങ്ങളുടെ ശരീരം നിങ്ങളുടെ ആത്മാവിന്‍റെ സാരംഗിയാണ്,

And it is yours to bring forth sweet music from it or confused sounds.

അതില്‍നിന്നും മധുര സംഗീതമോ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ കുഴഞ്ഞ ശബ്ദങ്ങളോ ഏതാണ് പുറത്ത് കൊണ്ടുവരേണ്ടത് എന്നുള്ളത് നിങ്ങളുടെ തീരുമാനമാണ്.

And now you ask in your heart, "How shall we distinguish that which is good in pleasure from that which is not good?"

ഇപ്പോള്‍ നിങ്ങളുടെ ഹൃദയത്തിനുള്ളിൽ നിങ്ങൾ ചോദിക്കും, 'ആനന്ദാനുഭവത്തില്‍, ഏതാണ് നല്ലത് എന്നത് നല്ലതല്ലാത്തതില്‍നിന്നും നാം എങ്ങിനെയാണ് തിരിച്ചറിയുക?'

Go to your fields and your gardens, and you shall learn that it is the pleasure of the bee to gather honey of the flower,

നിങ്ങളുടെ വയലുകളിലേക്കും നിങ്ങളുടെ പൂങ്കാവനങ്ങളിലേക്കും പോകുക, അവിടെനിന്നും നിങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് അറിയാനാകും, പൂക്കളില്‍നിന്നും തേന്‍ ശേഖരിക്കുക എന്നുള്ളത് തേനീച്ചയുടെ ആനന്ദാനുഭവമാണ് എന്ന്,

But it is also the pleasure of the flower to yield its honey to the bee.

അതേ സമയം, തേനീച്ചക്ക് അതിന്‍റെ മധുനുകരാൻ കൊടുക്കുക എന്നുള്ളത് പൂവിന്‍റേയും ആനന്ദാനുഭവം ആണ്.

For to the bee a flower is a fountain of life,

കാരണം, തേനീച്ചക്ക് ഒരു പുഷ്പം ജീവന്‍റെ നീര്‍ഉറവിടമാണ്.

And to the flower a bee is a messenger of love,

പൂച്ചെടിക്കാവട്ടെ, ഒരു തേനീച്ച ഒരു പ്രേമ സന്ദേശവാഹകനാണ്.

And to both, bee and flower, the giving and the receiving of pleasure is a need and an ecstasy.

ആ രണ്ട് പേര്‍ക്കും, തേനീച്ചക്കും പൂച്ചെടിക്കും, ആ സൂഖാനുഭവത്തിന്‍റെ നല്‍കലും, സ്വീകരിക്കലും ഒരു ആവശ്യകതയും ഒരു നിര്‍വൃതിയും ആണ്.

People of Orphalese, be in your pleasures like the flowers and the bees.

ഓര്‍ഫാലീസിലെ ജനങ്ങളെ, നിങ്ങളുടെ സൂഖോല്ലാസത്തില്‍, പൂച്ചെടികളെയും തേനീച്ചകളേയും പോലെ ആകുക.
