And a poet said, "Speak to us of Beauty."

എന്നിട്ട് ഒരു കവിഭാവനയുള്ള ആള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു, 'ഞങ്ങളോട് സൗന്ദര്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് സംസാരിക്കൂ.'

Where shall you seek beauty, and how shall you find her unless she herself be your way and your guide?

സൗന്ദര്യത്തെ നിങ്ങള്‍ എവിടെയാണ് തേടുക, അയാള്‍(സ്ത്രീ) സ്വയം നിങ്ങളുടെ വഴിയും നിങ്ങളുടെ വഴികാട്ടിയും ആവുന്നില്ലായെങ്കിൽ നിങ്ങൾ അയാളെ(സ്ത്രീ) എങ്ങിനെയാണ് കണ്ടെത്തുക?

And how shall you speak of her except she be the weaver of your speech?

അയാള്‍(സ്ത്രീ) നിങ്ങളുടെ വാക്കുകളുടെ നെയ്ത്തുകാരി ആവാതെ, അയാളെ(സ്ത്രീ)ക്കുറിച്ച് നിങ്ങള്‍ എങ്ങിനെ സംസാരിക്കും?

The aggrieved and the injured say, "Beauty is kind and gentle.

നൊമ്പരപ്പെടുന്നവരും, മുറിവേറ്റവരും പറയും, 'സൗന്ദര്യം ദയാലുവും മൃദുലവും അണ്.

Like a young mother half-shy of her own glory she walks among us."

സ്വന്തം തേജസിനാല്‍ അര്‍ദ്ധ-സങ്കോചമുള്ള ഒരു ചെറുപ്രായക്കാരിയായ അമ്മയെപ്പോലെ, അയാള്‍(സ്ത്രീ) നമ്മുടെ ഇടയില്‍ നടക്കുന്നു.'

And the passionate say, "Nay, beauty is a thing of might and dread.

Like the tempest she shakes the earth beneath us and the sky above us."

കൊടുങ്കാറ്റ് കണക്കെ അയാള്‍(സ്ത്രീ) നമുക്ക് കീഴില്‍ ഉള്ള ഭൂമിയേയും, നമുക്ക് മുകളിലുള്ള ആകാശത്തേയും പിടിച്ച്കുലുക്കുന്നു.'

The tired and the weary say, "beauty is of soft whisperings. She speaks in our spirit.

ക്ഷീണിതരും മനസ്സുതളര്‍ന്നവരും പറയും, 'സൗന്ദര്യം മൃദുലമായ അടക്കം പറച്ചിലുകള്‍ ഉള്ളതാണ്. അയാള്‍(സ്ത്രീ) നമ്മുടെ ആത്മസത്തയില്‍ സംസാരിക്കുന്നു.'

Her voice yields to our silences like a faint light that quivers in fear of the shadow."

നിഴലുകളെ ഭയന്ന് വിറക്കുന്ന ഒരു മങ്ങിയെ വെളിച്ചംകണക്കെ, അയാളുടെ(സ്ത്രീ) സ്വരം നമ്മുടെ നിശബ്ദതകള്‍ക്ക് കീഴടങ്ങുന്നു.'

But the restless say, "We have heard her shouting among the mountains,

And at noontide the toilers and the wayfarers say, "we have seen her leaning over the earth from the windows of the sunset."

മദ്ധ്യാഹ്നനേരത്ത് അദ്ധ്വാനിക്കുന്നവരും, വഴിപോക്കരും പറയും, 'സൂര്യാസ്തമയത്തിന്‍റെ ജാലകങ്ങളിലൂടെ അയാള്‍(സ്ത്രീ) ഭൂമിക്ക് മീതെ ചാഞ്ഞുനില്‍ക്കുന്നത് ഞങ്ങൾ കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്.'

In winter say the snow-bound, "She shall come with the spring leaping upon the hills."

തണുപ്പുകാലത്ത് കടുത്ത മഞ്ഞ് തേടിപ്പോകുന്നവര്‍ പറയും, 'വസന്തത്തില്‍ കുന്നിന്‍പുറങ്ങളില്‍ തുള്ളിചാടിക്കൊണ്ട് അയാള്‍(സ്ത്രീ) വരും.'

And in the summer heat the reapers say, "We have seen her dancing with the autumn leaves, and we saw a drift of snow in her hair."

വേനല്‍ചൂടിൽ, കൊയ്ത്തുകാർ പറയും, 'ശരത്കാല ഇലകളോടൊപ്പം അയാള്‍(സ്ത്രീ) നൃത്തംചെയ്യുന്നത് ഞങ്ങള്‍ കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്, അയാളുടെ(സ്ത്രീ) മുടിയില്‍ മഞ്ഞിന്‍റെ ഒരുകൊച്ചൊഴുക്കും ഞങ്ങൾ കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്.'

All these things have you said of beauty.

സൗന്ദര്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് നിങ്ങള്‍ ഈ കാര്യങ്ങളെല്ലാം പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്.

Yet in truth you spoke not of her but of needs unsatisfied,

എന്നിരുന്നാലും, നിറവേറ്റപ്പെടാത്ത ആവശ്യകതകളെക്കുറിച്ചല്ലാതെ, നിങ്ങള്‍ അയാളെ(സ്ത്രീ)ക്കുറിച്ച് പറഞ്ഞില്ല,

And beauty is not a need but an ecstasy.

എന്നാല്‍ സൗന്ദര്യം എന്നത് ഒരു ആവശ്യകതയല്ല, മറിച്ച് ഒരു നിര്‍വൃതിയാണ്.

It is not a mouth thirsting nor an empty hand stretched forth,
