Then a ploughman said, "Speak to us of Work."

അപ്പോള്‍ ഒരു കലപ്പക്കാരൻ പറഞ്ഞു, 'ഞങ്ങളോട് തൊഴില്‍ ചെയ്യുന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയൂ.'

And he answered, saying:

അതിന് അയാള്‍ മറുപടിപറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ട്, പറഞ്ഞു:

You work that you may keep pace with the earth and the soul of the earth.

ഭൂമിയുടേയും ഭൂമിയുടെ ആത്മാവിന്‍റേയും ഗതിവേഗത്തിനോടൊപ്പവും നീങ്ങുവാനാമുകാനാണ് നിങ്ങള്‍ ജോലിചെയ്യുന്നത്.

For to be idle is to become a stranger unto the seasons, and to step out of life's procession, that marches in majesty and proud submission towards the infinite.

കാരണം, അലസമായിരിക്കുകയെന്നത് ഋതുക്കള്‍ക്ക് അപരിചിതനാകുക എന്നതാണ്, മാത്രവുമല്ല, ഗാംഭീര്യത്തോടെയും, അഭിമാനത്തോടെയും അനന്തതയോട് അടിയറവ് പറഞ്ഞ്കൊണ്ട് അണിനടത്തം ചെയ്യുന്ന ജീവന്‍റെ ഘോഷയാത്രയില്‍നിന്നും പുറത്ത് കടക്കുകയെന്നുള്ളതും ആണ് അത്.

When you work you are a flute through whose heart the whispering of the hours turns to music.

നിങ്ങള്‍ തൊഴിൽ ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ, മണിക്കൂറുകളുടെ അടക്കംപറച്ചിലുകൾ ഹൃദയത്തില്‍ സംഗീതമായി മാറുന്ന ഒരു ഓടക്കുഴലായി മാറുന്നു നിങ്ങള്‍.

Which of you would be a reed, dumb and silent, when all else sings together in unison?

മാറ്റെല്ലാം രാഗൈക്യത്തോടുകൂടി പാടുമ്പോള്‍, മിണ്ടാട്ടമില്ലാത്തതും, നിശബ്ദവുമായ ഒരു പാഴ്ചൂരലായി നിങ്ങളിലാരാണ് നിലകൊളളുക?

Always you have been told that work is a curse and labour a misfortune.

എന്നും നിങ്ങളോട് പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുള്ളത്, തൊഴില്‍ ഒരു ശാപവും, അദ്ധ്വാനം ഒരു ദുര്‍ഭാഗ്യവും ആണ് എന്നാണ്.

But I say to you that when you work you fulfil a part of earth's furthest dream, assigned to you when that dream was born,

എന്നാല്‍ ഞാൻ നിങ്ങളോട് പറയുന്നു, നിങ്ങള്‍ തൊഴിൽ ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ, പൃഥ്വിയുടെ ഏറ്റവും വിദൂരത്തുള്ള സ്വപ്നത്തിന്‍റെ, ആ സ്വപ്നത്തിന്‍റെ ജനന സമയത്ത് തന്നെ നിങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് നല്‍കപ്പെട്ട, ഭാഗം നിങ്ങള്‍ സഫലീകരിക്കുന്നു,

And in keeping yourself with labour you are in truth loving life,

മാത്രവുമല്ല, നിങ്ങള്‍ അദ്ധ്വാനത്തിൽ മുഴുകിയിരിക്കുമ്പോൾ, സത്യത്തിൽ നിങ്ങള്‍ ജീവിതത്തെ സ്നേഹിക്കുകയാണ് ചെയ്യുന്നത്.

And to love life through labour is to be intimate with life's inmost secret.

ജീവിതത്തെ അദ്ധ്വാനത്തിലൂടെ പ്രണയിക്കുക എന്നുള്ളത്, ഉയിരിന്‍റെ ഏറ്റവും ആഴമേറിയ രഹസ്യവുമായി ആത്മബന്ധം പുലര്‍ത്തുകയെന്നുള്ളതാണ്.

But if you in your pain call birth an affliction and the support of the flesh a curse written upon your brow, then I answer that naught but the sweat of your brow shall wash away that which is written.

എന്നാല്‍ നിങ്ങളുടെ വേദനയിൽ, ജനനത്തെ ഒരു പീഡാനുഭവവും, മാസത്തിന്‍റെ പിന്തുണയെ നിങ്ങളുടെ പുരികത്തിന്മേൽ കുറിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ശാപവും ആയി നിങ്ങള്‍ പേരിടുകയാണെങ്കിൽ, ഞാൻ നിങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് മറുപടി നല്‍കുന്നു, എന്തെന്നാല്‍, നിങ്ങളുടെ പുരികത്തിൽ നിന്നുമൊഴുകുന്ന വിയര്‍പ്പിനല്ലാതെ മറ്റൊന്നിനും ഇങ്ങിനെ കുറിക്കപ്പെട്ടതിനെ കഴുകിക്കളയാൻ ആകില്ല.

You have been told also life is darkness, and in your weariness you echo what was said by the weary.

ജീവിതം ഒരു അന്ധകാരമാണ് എന്നും നിങ്ങളോട് പറയപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്, നിങ്ങളുടെ ക്ഷീണാവസ്ഥയില്‍ തളര്‍ന്നുകിടക്കുന്നവരുടെ വാക്കുകൾ നിങ്ങൾ പ്രതിധ്വനിക്കുന്നു.

And I say that life is indeed darkness save when there is urge,

പ്രചോദനം ഇല്ലാത്ത ഇടത്ത് ജീവിതം വാസ്തവത്തിൽ തമസ് തന്നെയാണ് എന്ന് ഞാന്‍ പറയുന്നു,

And all urge is blind save when there is knowledge,

ജ്ഞാനമില്ലാത്തിടത്ത് എല്ലാ പ്രചോദനങ്ങളും അന്ധമാണ്,

And all knowledge is vain save when there is work,

പ്രവര്‍ത്തനം ഇല്ലായെങ്കിൽ എല്ലാ വിജ്ഞാനവും വ്യര്‍ത്ഥമാണ്,

And all work is empty save when there is love;

അഭിനിവേശം ഇല്ലാത്തിടത്ത്, എല്ലാ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനവും നിരര്‍ത്ഥകവുമാണ്;

And when you work with love you bind yourself to yourself, and to one another, and to God.

അഭിനിവേശത്തോടുകൂടി നിങ്ങള്‍ തൊഴിൽ ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ, നിങ്ങളോടുതന്നെയും, അന്യോന്യവും, ദൈവത്തോടും നിങ്ങളെത്തന്നെ നിങ്ങള്‍ ബന്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

And what is it to work with love?

പ്രതിപത്തിയോടുകൂടി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുക എന്നത് എന്താണ്?

It is to weave the cloth with threads drawn from your heart, even as if your beloved were to wear that cloth.

നിങ്ങളുടെ പ്രണയിനി ധരിക്കും എന്നതുപോലെ, നിങ്ങളുടെ ഹൃദയത്തില്‍നിന്നും വലിച്ചെടുത്ത നൂൽ കൊണ്ട് ഉടുപ്പ് നെയ്യുക എന്നതാണ്, അത്.

It is to build a house with affection, even as if your beloved were to dwell in that house.

നിങ്ങളുടെ പ്രണയിനി അവിടെ താമസിക്കും എന്നതുപോലെ, വാത്സല്യത്തോടുകൂടി ഒരു വീട് കെട്ടുക എന്നത് ആണ് അത്.

It is to sow seeds with tenderness and reap the harvest with joy, even as if your beloved were to eat the fruit.

നിങ്ങളുടെ പ്രണയിനി അതിന്‍റെ കായ്കനി തിന്നും എന്നതുപോലെ, മൃദുലതയോടുകൂടി വിത്തുകള്‍ വിതയ്ക്കുകയും ആനന്ദത്തോടുകൂടി വിളകൊയ്യുകയും ചെയ്യുക എന്നത് ആണ് അത്.

It is to charge all things you fashion with a breath of your own spirit,

നിങ്ങള്‍ രൂപകല്‍പ്പനചെയ്യുന്ന എല്ലാകാര്യങ്ങളും നിങ്ങളുടെ സ്വന്തം ആത്മാവിന്‍റെ നിശ്വാസത്താൽ ഉത്തേജിപ്പിക്കുക എന്നത് ആണ് അത്,

And to know that all the blessed dead are standing about you and watching.

അനുഗ്രഹീതരായ പ്രേതാത്മാക്കള്‍ നിങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ചുറ്റും നില്‍ക്കുകയും വീക്ഷിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട് എന്ന് അറിയുക എന്നത് ആണ് അത്.

Often have I heard you say, as if speaking in sleep, "he who works in marble, and finds the shape of his own soul in the stone, is a nobler than he who ploughs the soil.

'വെണ്ണക്കല്ലില്‍ വേലചെയ്യുകയും, അയാളുടെ സ്വന്തം ആത്മാവിന്‍റെ രൂപം കല്ലില്‍ കണ്ടെത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന ആളാണ് മണ്ണ് ഉഴുവുന്നവനേക്കാളും ശ്രേഷ്ഠന്‍' എന്ന് മയക്കത്തിൽ പറയുന്നു എന്നവണ്ണം നിങ്ങൾ പറയുന്നത് ഞാന്‍ പലപ്പോഴും കേട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്,

And he who seizes the rainbow to lay it on a cloth in the likeness of man, is more than he who makes the sandals for our feet."

But I say, not in sleep but in the over-wakefulness of noontide, that the wind speaks not more sweetly to the giant oaks than to the least of all the blades of grass;

എന്നാല്‍ ഉറക്കംവന്ന അവസ്ഥയിലല്ല, മറിച്ച് നട്ടുച്ചനേരത്തെ അമിതമായുള്ള ബോധാവസ്ഥയില്‍ത്തന്നെ ഞാൻ പറയുന്നു, ഏറ്റവും നിസ്സാരങ്ങളായ പുല്ലിന്‍ ഇലകളോട് സംസാരിക്കുന്ന മാധുര്യത്തില്‍ ഒട്ടും കൂടുതലായല്ല ഭീമാകാരങ്ങളായ ഓക്കുമരങ്ങളോട് കാറ്റ് ഉരിയാടുക;

And he alone is great who turns the voice of the wind into a song made sweeter by his own loving.

കാറ്റിന്‍റെ സ്വരത്തെ സ്വന്തം വാത്സല്യത്താൽ കൂടുതൽ മാധുര്യമുള്ള ഒരു ഗാനമായി മാറ്റുന്ന ആ ആൾ ഒരുവൻ മാത്രമാണ് മഹാനായിട്ടുള്ളത്.

Work is love made visible.

പ്രവര്‍ത്തനം എന്നുള്ളത് ദൃശ്യമാക്കപ്പെട്ട വാത്സല്യമാണ്.

And if you cannot work with love but only with distaste, it is better that you should leave your work and sit at the gate of the temple and take alms of those who work with joy.

സ്നേഹത്തോടുകൂടി നിങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് തൊഴിൽ ചെയ്യാനാകുന്നില്ല, മറിച്ച് അരുചിയോടുകൂടിമാത്രമേ അത് പറ്റുന്നുള്ളു എങ്കില്‍, നിങ്ങളുടെ തൊഴിൽ വിട്ട് പോയി, അമ്പല കവാടത്തില്‍ ഇരുന്ന്, ആഹ്ളാദത്തോടുകൂടി തൊഴില്‍ ചെയ്യുന്നവരില്‍നിന്നും ഭിക്ഷ നേടുന്നതാണ് നല്ലത്.

For if you bake bread with indifference, you bake a bitter bread that feeds but half man's hunger.

കാരണം ആലംഭാവത്തോടുകൂടിയാണ് നിങ്ങൾ റൊട്ടി ചുടുന്നതെങ്കിൽ, കേവലം ഒരു അര്‍ദ്ധ മനുഷ്യന്‍റെ വിശപ്പ് മാത്രം അടക്കുന്ന ഒരു കയ്പുള്ള റോട്ടിയാണ് നിങ്ങള്‍ ചുടുക.

And if you grudge the crushing of the grapes, your grudge distils a poison in the wine.

മുന്തിരി ചതക്കുന്നതില്‍ നിങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് മനസ്സില്ലായ്മയുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ, നിങ്ങളുടെ ആ വിദ്വേഷം വീഞ്ഞില്‍ ഒരു വിഷാംശം വാറ്റുന്നു.

And if you sing though as angels, and love not the singing, you muffle man's ears to the voices of the day and the voices of the night.

മാലാഖമാരെപ്പോലെ നിങ്ങള്‍ പാടുമെങ്കിലും, നിങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ആ പാടുന്നതിനോട് പ്രീയമില്ലെങ്കില്‍, പകലിന്‍റെ സ്വരങ്ങളില്‍നിന്നും, രാത്രിയുടെ സ്വരങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും മനുഷ്യന്‍റെ ചെവിയെ നിങ്ങൾ മൂടിപ്പിടിക്കുന്നു.
